Process
1. Introduction (10 minutes)
- Facilitator welcomes participants and introduces the topic:
“Today, we’ll explore why teams sometimes feel disconnected from leadership, how this affects engagement and performance, and what we can do to strengthen the connection.” - Poll question: “How connected do you feel to your organisation’s leadership and vision? (1 = Not at all, 5 = Very connected)” (Share anonymous results.)
- Discuss common reasons virtual teams feel disconnected from leadership, such as:
- Lack of direct communication with leadership
- Unclear company goals or vision
- Feeling that leadership decisions don’t reflect team realities
2. The Leadership Connection Challenge (15 minutes)
Exercise: What’s Missing?
- Breakout rooms (3-4 people per group).
- Each group discusses:
- Have you ever felt disconnected from leadership? What caused it?
- How did that impact your motivation, decision-making, or teamwork?
- What actions or communication could have improved the connection?
- Groups return and share insights on why leadership feels distant and how it affects team engagement.
3. Key Strategies for Strengthening Connection with Leadership (15 minutes)
- Facilitator introduces three key strategies for bridging the gap between leadership and teams:
- Increase leadership visibility – More frequent, transparent communication strengthens trust.
- Clarify the connection between team work and company goals – Help teams see how their work supports the bigger picture.
- Encourage two-way dialogue – Create spaces where team members feel heard and can share feedback with leadership.
- Chat question: “What’s one way leadership could improve how they connect with teams?”
- Participants share ideas, and facilitator highlights key themes like open forums, leadership presence in team meetings, and clearer communication of strategic goals.
4. Practical Application: Strengthening Leadership-Team Connection (15 minutes)
Exercise: Bridging the Gap
- Participants write down a recent situation where leadership felt disconnected from the team.
- They swap examples (or facilitator selects a few).
- Each person redesigns the situation using one of the key strategies for better leadership connection.
- Example transformations:
- ❌ Leadership made a major policy change, but the team wasn’t consulted or informed in advance.
- ✅ A regular Q&A session with leadership was introduced to explain decisions and gather team input.
- Share responses and discuss how small leadership engagement efforts create stronger team alignment.
5. Action Plan and Close (5 minutes)
- Each participant commits to one action they’ll take to strengthen connection with leadership in their team.
- Facilitator summarises key takeaways.
- Final poll: “How confident do you feel about improving leadership connection in your team?”
