What is it?
A 3-step process you can add to the end of any workshop to embed learning and collect the feedback you need to improve next time.
Why is it useful?
- Gives you a ready-made structure for closing strongly.
- Reinforces learning so participants leave with clarity.
- Creates alignment across the group.
- Captures useful feedback for your future workshops.
Objectives
By the end of the process, every participant should feel that:
- The workshop was a valuable use of their time.
- Their thinking on the topic has evolved.
- They are more aligned with colleagues.
- They had the opportunity to give feedback.
Process (max 20 minutes)
1. Objectives (5 minutes)
- Revisit the objectives you set at the start of the workshop.
- Go through them one by one.
- Ask: “Did we achieve that today?”
- Flag any objectives not achieved and agree next steps.
- Goal: confirm progress and close the loop on commitments.
2. “I used to think…, but now I think…” (10 minutes)
- Ask participants to complete this sentence:
“I used to think __________, but now I think __________.” - Allow 2 minutes for reflection, 2 minutes for writing.
- Share answers as a whole group (or in smaller groups if >15 people).
- Goal: embed learning and build alignment.
3. “What Went Well? Even Better If…” (5 minutes)
- Ask two questions:
- “What went well in this workshop for you?”
- “What would have made this workshop even better?”
- Capture answers visibly on flip chart paper.
- Goal: gather feedback for improvement and let participants offload frustrations before leaving.
Secret Sauce
- In Step 2, it’s fine if someone’s thinking hasn’t changed. Encourage honesty—there is no “wrong” answer.
- Always capture feedback live so participants see their voices valued.
- This closing routine works in any type of workshop and creates consistency in how you end sessions.
