Workshop Title
"Reconnecting Remote Teams to Purpose and Meaning"
Problem
Team members don’t see the value of their work.

Benefits
- Stronger sense of meaning and motivation in daily work
- Clearer understanding of how individual contributions support bigger goals
- Improved morale through visible impact and recognition
- Stronger alignment with team and company mission
- Increased engagement and long-term commitment
Materials Needed
- 60 mins
- Virtual meeting platform (Zoom, Teams, etc.)
- Collaborative document (Google Docs, Miro, MURAL, etc.)
- Polling or chat function for quick engagement
- Breakout room feature for small-group discussions
Process
1. Introduction (10 minutes)
- Facilitator welcomes participants and introduces the topic:
“Today, we’ll explore why purpose is essential for motivation, how it can fade in virtual teams, and what we can do to reconnect with the value of our work.” - Poll question: “On a scale of 1-5, how strongly do you feel connected to the purpose of your work?” (Share anonymous results.)
- Discuss common reasons team members lose their sense of purpose, such as:
- Feeling disconnected from the company’s mission
- Repetitive tasks without visible impact
- Lack of feedback or recognition for contributions
2. The Purpose Challenge (15 minutes)
Exercise: Finding Meaning in the Work
- Breakout rooms (3-4 people per group).
- Each group discusses:
- Think of a time when your work felt truly meaningful—what made it feel that way?
- Now think of a time when it felt like just another task—what was missing?
- What patterns do you see in why some work feels purposeful while other work doesn’t?
- Groups return and share insights on why purpose can fade and what helps restore it.
3. Key Strategies for Strengthening Purpose (15 minutes)
- Facilitator introduces three key strategies for helping teams connect with their purpose:
- Clarify the impact of each role – Show how individual work contributes to larger goals.
- Reinforce team and customer impact – Share success stories that highlight how the work makes a difference.
- Celebrate progress and contributions – Regularly recognise achievements to maintain motivation.
- Chat question: “What’s one thing that makes your work feel meaningful?”
- Participants share ideas, and facilitator highlights key themes like recognition, seeing direct results, and feeling valued.
4. Practical Application: Reconnecting to Purpose (15 minutes)
Exercise: Linking Daily Work to Bigger Impact
- Participants write down a specific task they do regularly that feels routine or unimportant.
- They swap examples (or facilitator selects a few).
- Each person redesigns the task’s description to highlight its value and impact.
- Example transformations:
- ❌ “I update reports every week, but no one seems to care.”
- ✅ “My reports provide key insights that help leadership make informed decisions.”
- Share responses and discuss how reframing work helps team members see its value more clearly.
5. Action Plan and Close (5 minutes)
- Each participant commits to one action they’ll take to reinforce purpose in their daily work.
- Facilitator summarises key takeaways.
- Final poll: “How confident do you feel about reconnecting with the purpose of your work?”
