What is it?
A workshop to help your team set and focus on easy tasks that move them closer to their main objective.
Why is it useful?
- Keeps your team on track by linking small, specific actions to the bigger picture.
- Uses a micro goals strategy to achieve big results step by step.
- Builds momentum with clear, simple wins.
Objective
To help your team set and focus on easy tasks that move them closer to their main objective.
Process
1. Identify the large goals
- Start with BHAGs (Big Hairy Audacious Goals).
- A great BHAG should:
- Stimulate forward momentum
- Get people excited
- Be adventurous yet achievable
- Encourage your team to throw their talent and energy into it
2. Break down the large goals into small tasks
- Define clear, easy-to-understand tasks that are within reach.
- Break them into manageable actions (e.g. 15-minute daily increments) for consistent progress.
3. Prioritise your micro goals
- Identify which small tasks best contribute to achieving the BHAGs.
- Ensure team agreement before moving forward.
- If stuck, use a tool like The Prioritization Matrix to visually identify the highest-priority tasks.
4. Agree responsibilities & deadlines
- Assign responsibility for each micro goal and agree on deadlines.
- Do a quick sense check to confirm deadlines are realistic and achievable.
5. Review progress often
- Meet monthly to review BHAGs and micro goals.
- Ask:
- Are the BHAGs still correct? If not, update them.
- Do the micro goals still add up to achieving the BHAGs? If not, revisit priorities.
- Are deadlines realistic and achievable? If not, adjust them.
Secret Sauce
- A strong BHAG creates energy and direction — it must excite and stretch the team without being impossible.
- Regular reviews are the key to success. Build them into your planning from the start to keep momentum.
