Problem
The team struggles to address challenges effectively due to a lack of collaborative brainstorming and decision-making.
Workshop Title
"Solve It Together: Enhancing Team Problem-Solving Skills"
Objectives
- Identify common barriers to effective problem-solving.
- Equip the team with structured techniques to solve problems collaboratively.
- Foster creativity and innovation in addressing challenges.
Materials Needed
- Flipchart or whiteboard.
- Sticky notes and markers.
- Pre-prepared team challenges for the practice activity if you don’t have enough time to create them in the workshop.
Process
1. Welcome and Icebreaker (10 minutes)
Activity: Problem-Solving Superheroes
↳ Each participant shares which superhero they would be in solving team problems and why.
2. Understanding the Problem (15 minutes)
Activity: Barriers to Problem-Solving
↳ In small groups, participants brainstorm common barriers to effective problem-solving (e.g., unclear goals, lack of collaboration, fear of failure).
↳ Share findings with the larger group.
3. Introducing a Problem-Solving Framework (15 minutes)
Activity: The 4-Step Framework
↳ Introduce a simple, structured problem-solving model:
- Define the Problem: Be clear and specific.
- Generate Ideas: Brainstorm solutions without judgment.
- Evaluate Options: Assess feasibility and impact.
- Implement and Review: Test solutions and adjust as needed.
4. Collaborative Problem-Solving Practice (30 minutes)
Activity: Solve a Team Challenge
↳ Divide participants into small groups. Work on real or hypothetical team challenges (e.g., "How can we improve team communication?”).
↳ Groups work through the 4-Step Framework:
1. Define the challenge.
2. Brainstorm possible solutions.
3. Evaluate and select the best solution.
4. Plan how to implement it.
↳ Groups present their solutions to the larger team.
5. Fostering Innovation (15 minutes)
Activity: What If We…?
↳ Use a creative thinking exercise to generate out-of-the-box ideas.
↳ Pose a challenge and ask participants to answer with “What if we…?” ideas, no matter how unconventional.
6. Closing and Reflection (5 minutes)
Activity: Problem-Solving Pledges
↳ Each participant commits to one action they’ll take to improve problem-solving within the team (e.g., “I’ll focus on defining problems more clearly before proposing solutions”).
↳ Share these pledges with the group.
