Workshop Title
"Boosting Innovation in Remote Teams"

Benefits
- More frequent generation of fresh ideas
- Greater willingness to experiment and take risks
- Constructive feedback that strengthens ideas
- Reduced barriers to creativity in virtual settings
- A stronger culture of collaboration and continuous improvement
Materials Needed
- 60 mins
- Virtual meeting platform (Zoom, Teams, etc.)
- Collaborative document (Google Docs, Miro, MURAL, etc.)
- Polling or chat function for quick engagement
- Breakout room feature for small-group discussions
Process
1. Introduction (10 minutes)
- Facilitator welcomes participants and introduces the topic:
“Today, we’ll explore how to make virtual teams more innovative by improving collaboration, idea-sharing, and creative problem-solving.” - Poll question: “How often does your team generate or implement new ideas?” (Scale 1-5, anonymous results shared.)
- Discuss common barriers to innovation in virtual teams, such as:
- Lack of brainstorming opportunities
- Fear of sharing new ideas due to judgment
- A culture that prioritises efficiency over experimentation
2. The Innovation Challenge (15 minutes)
Exercise: Breaking the Routine
- Breakout rooms (3-4 people per group).
- Each group discusses:
- What’s one outdated process or approach your team still uses?
- If there were no limits, how would you redesign it?
- What stops teams from implementing new ideas?
- Groups return and share insights on where innovation is blocked.
3. Key Strategies for Encouraging Innovation (15 minutes)
- Facilitator introduces three key strategies to foster creativity in virtual teams:
- Create space for new ideas – Dedicate time for brainstorming without immediate evaluation.
- Encourage risk-taking – A culture of experimentation leads to better innovation.
- Make feedback constructive – Ideas improve when team members build on them rather than dismiss them.
- Chat question: “What’s one way your team could encourage more innovation?”
- Participants share ideas, and facilitator highlights key themes like psychological safety, creative discussions, and testing new concepts.
4. Practical Application: Reframing Challenges (15 minutes)
Exercise: Solving It Differently
- Participants write down a current team challenge that feels stuck.
- They swap examples (or facilitator selects a few).
- Each person redesigns the approach using one of the key strategies.
- Example transformations:
- ❌ “We always do meetings this way.”
- ✅ “What if we replaced one weekly meeting with a shared idea board?”
- Share responses and discuss how small shifts lead to innovative improvements.
5. Action Plan and Close (5 minutes)
- Each participant commits to one action they’ll take to boost innovation in their work.
- Facilitator summarises key takeaways.
- Final poll: “How confident do you feel about fostering innovation in your virtual team?”
