Problem
Teams work in isolation, focusing only on their goals without considering the organisation’s broader objectives or the needs of other teams.
Workshop Title
"Breaking Down Silos: Building a Unified Organisation"
Objectives
- Identify the causes and impacts of silo mentality.
- Foster understanding and alignment between teams.
- Develop strategies for improving cross-team collaboration.
Materials Needed
- Flipchart or whiteboard.
- Large sheets of paper for Team Snapshots.
- Sticky notes for brainstorming.
Process
1. Welcome and Icebreaker (10 minutes)
Activity: Team Highlights
↳ Ask each team to share a recent success they’re proud of and how it contributed to organisational goals.
2. Identifying Silo Barriers (20 minutes)
Activity: Spot the Silos
↳ In small groups, participants brainstorm signs of silo mentality within the organisation (e.g., lack of communication, reluctance to share resources).
↳ Groups share their insights, and the facilitator captures themes on a flipchart.
3. Building Inter-Team Understanding (25 minutes)
Activity: Team Snapshot Exchange
↳ Each team creates a “snapshot” about their department, including:
- Who We Are: Key roles and responsibilities.
- What We Do: Primary objectives and contributions.
- What We Need: Support or input they require from other teams.
- What We Offer: Resources or expertise they can provide.
↳ Teams present their snapshots to the group.
4. Collaboration Strategy Development (25 minutes)
Activity: Bridging the Gaps
↳ In mixed-team groups, participants brainstorm solutions for overcoming silo mentality. Encourage them to consider:
- Regular inter-team meetings or updates.
- Shared tools for tracking progress and communication.
- Joint goals or projects that require collaboration.
↳ Groups share their ideas, and the facilitator consolidates them into a shared "Collaboration Strategy Plan."
5. Closing and Reflection (10 minutes)
Activity: Collaboration Commitments
↳ Each participant shares one action they’ll take to break down silos (e.g., “I’ll invite other teams to review our processes”).
